DROWNING IN BATIK
A Play ~ A Novella ~ A Photographic Exposé
by Suzanne Limozinere
La Suzanna developed Drowning in Batik, a.k.a. DIB, over a ten-year period, weaving three separate genres: a Stage Play, a Novella, and a Photographic Exposé.
The first stage began as a full length stage play, A Lifetime Of Everything.... The main characters Yvonne and Jerome struggle with the demise of their marriage and ultimately the consequences. Set in Paris, France, where Jerome makes a surprise visit to Yvonne. Once the truth of the visit is uncovered, they face one another candidly for the first time in their thirty-plus years of knowing one another.
ACT 1, SCENE 1
Time: Present. February. Late afternoon.
Place: Cafe Charlot on the corner of Rue Charlot, Paris, France.
At Rise: The curtain rises. An American woman, Yvonne, 58, is sitting at a corner table, stage left. She is wearing a cashmere sweater and jeans. Her hair is pulled back in a bun. There is a carafe of red wine and an extra glass. Yvonne is sipping a glass of red wine and leafing through the paper. She occasionally checks her watch. Her foot taps to the beat of Serge Gainsbourg’s “Je t’aime moi non plus.” An American man, Jerome, 61, enters stage right. He is wearing a navy blue down vest, his neck wrapped in a colorful scarf. He’s carrying an overnight bag. As he enters he scours the cafe. He is shivering. He spots Yvonne sitting at a corner table. She does not see him. He approaches her table.
JEROME
Yvonne
Yvonne looks up. She is startled.
YVONNE
Jerome?! What are you doing here?
Jerome slides in the booth.
The second stage follows with the novella Drowning In Batik. This story focuses on the main character Ynez. Ynez takes herself out of her comfort zone and holes up in Bali, Indonesia. There she struggles with the marriage and death of her husband, Julian. The protective cloak of the Balinese culture is shed when Ynez takes us on a journey through the exploration of the play she is writing.
DIB Photographic Exposé spans over the ten year creation of DIB. The photographs and photographs of collages expose and explore the beauty of love and the harshness of betrayal.
La Suzanna invites you to a preview of Drowning In Batik. Soon to be released.
